Gown up, Glove up, but Don't Give up!

I have just contributed to Patty's request today (see previous post) and strongly encourage everybody who reads this blog to do so as well.

Here's the deal at St. Mary's: Park in the Parking Garage because it's free and secure. You'll enter the facility through a door from the garage, and go to the first floor. Walk down the long corridor (don't veer off to the Bishop Kearney suite). You'll need to sign-in at the reception desk and get a pass. They'll buzz you in and Walt is on the 5th floor (if I remember correctly). As you come off the elevator, keep bearing right and he's at the end of the hall (sorry I don't remember the room number).

You'll have to put on a gown and a pair of latex gloves, which you'll find conveniently located on a cart outside his room. That's the policy right now at least. The upside is that there is a game room on the floor with all sorts of board/card games like checkers, Boggle, Scrabble, etc. etc. and a couple of computer screens which look they have internet access. Some of the other residents patients hang out in the hallways - it ain't Disneyland, but it's a bit more lively and upbeat than the hospital.

Corinne and I visited Walt Saturday while Linsday was there. We stayed for a good while, and accompanied Lindsay and Walt to the dining room where he ate, along with other residents and memebers of their families and friends. If you want to eat though, you have to bring your own.

Like anything, the experience at St. Mary's is what we make it. Walt needs our help to make his experience at St. Mary's comforting, loving and supportive. All of the physical therapy, occ. thereapy, speech therapy and cognitive therapy that the staff delivers will have so much more of an impact if Walt has people he loves around him day by day. Loving, emotional support cannot be purchased through health insurance or delivered through institutions.

So let's gown-up, glove-up, and go up to St. Mary's and give back to Walt what Walt has so freely given to all of us.

Things to do with your used latex gloves:
  • Draw a face on the palm and blow it up. Glue it to the end of a popsicle stick. Pop it up and down over the wall in your cubicle and see how long it takes to drive your office mate to notice.
  • Have a contest with the family to see who can make the most disgusting sound by letting the air out of the blown-up latex glove.
  • Fill them with water and have a water balloon toss. Why not save several pair for a festive 4th of July with the kiddies!

Things to do with your used gown:
  • Write your initials on the tag with a Sharpie and see if you get the same gown the next time you visit.
  • Cut two small holes in middle and use it as a halloween costume - be the first on your block to be a yellow ghost!

Hello everyone, I will be up as soon as I can to see Walt at St. Mary's. Walt, I am so proud of you for getting to the next big step. St. Mary's is well known for the unit you are on and will work hard with you to get you re-stimulated again. Patty, Lindsey and Brian- you have been so strong and amazing through all of this rollercoaster ride. Walt would not be as far as he is right now if it wasn't for all his family and friends that have been dedicated to working so hard with him on a daily basis. I cant wait until you can read this whole story that has been compiled by so many throughout the past months. Love to all of you. Cousin Linda and cousin Sammy

Hi Patty and family,

I am so glad to hear Walter has been moved to St Mary's - this is great news!
He is where he is today because of all of your hard work and dedication, and of course, Walter's drive to get home where he belongs.
Keep up the good work Walter!

Love,

Deb Christmas

Today is a true milestone in Walter's recovery as he begins his rehab at St. Mary's. My Mom and I stopped up at about 1:15 today. We met Pat and Walter minutes after he finished his physical therapy. While he looked quite tired he was able to greet us. He so wanted to go to bed but Pat stated that he had "more classes to attend," the next one being speech therapy. After a very short visit to his room (during which he listened to us chatting and even asked a question here and there) we proceeded to his next assignment. The speech therapist kept him very busy (although he was insistant that he be allowed to sleep). She worked on the date, asked him who had accompanied him to this session, read stories to him/asked yes and no questions, had him locate circles on a page filled with multiple shapes. All in all, Walter did exceptionally well. When asked who Patty was, he said without hesitation, "SHE'S # 1!!!"
We all got a chuckle out of that one, especially Patty.
He watched the clock and knew that at 2:00 he could return to his room. You can't get anything by him. We accompanied him to his room, where an aide situated him comfortably in bed.
He earned this well deserved nap. I marvel at all he can do. Walter is an amazing man. While he still has a ways to go, it is time to celebrate his daily achievements.
"WALTER, YOU RECEIVED ALL A'S IN MY GRADE BOOK TODAY! KEEP UP THE TREMENDDOUS JOB!"

Stopped by around 4ish to see Walter the crab. He had his pillow next to his head and was napping. We woke him because I picked up a milk shake on my way over. He wasn't ready for a snack so the nurse put in the frig. After a few more attempts to talk with walt, he decided to cover his face with his pillow. I think he was tired and depressed, so we let him rest. He can get away with this now because we feel sorry for his position, but sooner than later I'm going to force 2 porkers with everything, and cold beer down that throat.

Crack that whip Patty.

GET YOUR ASS MOVING WALTER

(and don't forget the milk shake in the frig)

Patty says: Today I saw the strength and determination that Walter has in him. I have always know this but he pushed himself to the limit today. He was soooo tired but kept going on the parallel bars. I said "if you want to come home you need to do do this". And he did. He just kept talking about going to bed. He ended his three hours of therapy on a good note and received his reward of a nap. But I have to admit he looked as wide awake as I have ever seen him after his busy day of rehab. You will do well Walter-don't worry about a thing. Always-P

Hi Walt: We visited you today and I believe you were happy to see us. You made a couple of funny comments that made us laugh and thought to myself Walt is back to his usual dry humor. I loved it when I took a photo of you and told you to say CHEESE, and you did it so willingly, you are such a ham. We want to wish you the very best and for a speedy recovery. God Bless you Walt.
