Walt's cousin Brenda came up last week from Florida to visit. She posed with Tip (seated) and Walt (reclined). If Brenda lived up here then Walt would be pretty spoiled and the St. Mary's staff would be pretty pissed.
I had a dream Friday night that Walt had recovered. I woke up relieved and hopeful. When I visited the hospital on Saturday I found Walt in the dining room intently going after everything on his lunch tray, but smeared with the baked beans that he was eating without utensils. I cleaned him up and took him back to his room. He wasn't talking or responding much even though he seemed alert. I put a rolly tray in front of him, and put the DVD player in front of that so that we could watch Caddyshack and split an apple turnover that I brought. He ate his half of the turnover then grabbed two tubes of ointment that were also on the rolly tray and tried to stick them in his mouth. I took them away and put them at a safe distance. I turned on the movie but he wasn't really interested. Patty called about that time and gave me an update on Walt's week. I mentioned to her that I had removed his hand brace when I was cleaning him up from lunch. At the mention of the brace Walt stuck out his hand and I gave it to him. I thought that was a good sign and told Pat, thinking that he wanted to put it back on. Pat asked me to gently exercise his right arm so I hung up with her and went to work with Walt. He took the brace and held it to his ear like a phone. I don't know if he thought the brace was a phone, or he was trying to tell me to give him the phone, or if he had wanted the phone when I was talking with Pat. I am completely useless trying to interpret his signals. Anyway, he seemed to think the brace was a phone and he seemed to get more and more uncomfortable when I took the brace to put on his right hand--he was sweating like crazy by that time. The brace went on fairly easily and he didn't wince or otherwise indicate that it hurt, but I don't know.
The phone rang again and this time it was Brenda. I gave Walt the phone and she talked to him for awhile. I couldn't understand his words but he was making an attempt. We lost the connection a few times so I held the phone for him and we stayed connected. When I checked with Brenda to ask if she was finished talking with Walt she had a request. Brenda said that she wasn't going to ask me to kiss Walt for her, but she asked me if I would blow him kisses and say they were from her. I told her "no way". His recovery is tough enough as it is--there's no sense driving him over the edge.
I continued to play the Caddyshack video--Rodney Dangerfield had just ripped a fart at the dinner table and said, "Hey, did somebody step on a duck?." Walt seemed to get more and more tired which I attributed to the Kenny Loggins music in the video. Just then, Walt had more visitors--Anna and David stopped by. David had driven up from Florida to visit. We chatted for awhile. Walt was pretty pale by then--David dried the sweat from Walt's face which seemed to relieve him a bit. Then David called the nurse to give Walter a change and we left the room. I showed David where the air hockey machine is if he happens to visit when it's available. The staff cleaned Walt up and put him in bed where he rested much more comfortably. I noticed that Walt's right hand wasn't clenched at all while he slept. I could easily straighten it out so that his hand was flat on his chest. I had been there a couple of hours by that time so I said goodbye while Anna and David stayed. Just as I got to the elevators I saw Lindsay who was coming up for a longer visit (she brought home work).
It was easier to visit when Walt was making daily progress back in June. I would rather help him work out than clean beans off his face. But in fact, one is just as important as the other. It's what he needs at the moment. I look forward to the day when that dream I had comes true.

How true Gino that it so hard to see Walt struggle and at the moment we have gone from cheering the walks down the corridor to celebrating a word we can understand. But being there wiping the baked beans is what he needs and I am so happy to see Walt's friends and family push through how difficult and upsetting this setback has been and are coming to visit anyway.
For many people this means they have had to get over just being in a hospital or being around a sick person or touching another man or feeling inadequate because we can't "fix" this or know the "right" thing to do or say. But we go and keep going although it is sometimes really hard to deal with the emotions this situation brings up. We go because our friend needs us and we are making a difference whether we think so or not.
I have just gotten home from the hospital. My drives home are always interesting. Some days I am happy because Walt was better than yesterday, he had been able to do something that he couldn't do the day before. Sometimes I drive home in tears because his infections are back and his health and progress are going backwards. Sometimes, like today I am both.
Today I was sad because his stomach/digestive tract infection is not clearing up and his diarrhea is constant so he could not do his therapy. The infection also seems to cloud his mind again and make is body stiffen and very unresponsive. But I was also happier because there were some more positive things that happened too. One was seeing Tim who comes often to do the "baked bean wiping" and encouraging Walt to do anything he can. Whether it is move a hand or just a finger, much like you do Tom, anything to keep his body and mind connected.
Cousin Dave is back in town for the week and has been up at the hospital everyday to "annoy" his older cousin like the old days. between the 3 of us we were fussing around like some old hens over a chick. But we weren't letting Walt get away with anything. If he couldn't move the right hand than he had to keep trying until he at least moved his thumb. It was heartening to see Walt become more alert and responsive to our efforts.
He even indicated that he needed to use the urinal and did.
It has been a very long and emotionally exhausting six months for everyone. It is important that we do not give up on our friend and keep encouraging him to fight. It is also important to keep encouraging and supporting each other through the lows that this insane roller coaster produces.
Love and light to all the Walt Watch Bloggers. Send lots of positive thoughts to Walt and the rest of us. It would be great to hear a line or two from each of the you, to know that we are all still connected in our concern.
Cheers
Corinne
Corinne, thanks for the update. I am one of the Walt blog readers. Since I've never met Walt I didn't think it would make sense for me to visit him...he'd wonder who is this strange woman coming to see him. But my husband visits with Tom W. sometimes. We've had a house-full of company for the past 3 wks but once everyone goes home Ron will visit Walt again.
Meantime, I want you to know that Walt and all of you are very much in our prayers at home, at church and even in our "underground prayer chain" here at work. Please know that you are not alone in this.
Love,
Kathy Chapman
Thank you Kathy. The prayers are wonderful. Walt was feeling a little better today, which is good news.
I spent the morning with Walt and then left him to have lunch with Gary and Tim, you know how important it is to have "bloke time".
Cheers
Corinne
p.s. Patty asked me to mention that it is probably a good idea to eat any food that you have brought up to share with Walt in the Dinning or day room.
Corrine, Just so you know I am still "out there" (hmm this may not be news to people who know me...) anyhow, I owe Walter another visit and an apple pastry. I will show up around dinner time and catch him in the cafe. None of us will give up on our friend although it is surely difficult to see him struggle so. Life so often has its own plans and all we can do is keep the faith and cherish every moment, even the not so great ones. See you soon, I hope.

Hi Corinne, Patty and all. I am still reading the blog...I'll be up to see you all and keep the information coming!
Cousin Debby
Patty says" Kathy C. Please come and visit Walter. I would love to meet you. You are so supportive!! I really wish all of our friends were so supportive!! I have not heard from our "best friends". I think that they "left the country". Walter would be so dissapointed and hurt!!! I know that i am.
But we must focus on the positive. Walter spoke some English last night. He asked for "water". He also looked very "bright and alert" until 8:35 which is really a blessing. Usually he is half asleep at that hour. I will never give up on Walter and no one else will either.
I would love to see some "work buddies" and some "beer drinking buddies and some "fun friends". Like I said before. Walter would be there for all of you ( and he has). Where are you guys? We would love to see you at St. Mary's.
Thanks again to Walter's dedicated friends for all that they have done for him. Lunch duty withTimmy has been wonderful and very beneficial for Walter. Gary is so caring and wonderful. Guys like you will get Walter through this challenge with your bravery and thoughtfulness. Walter chose his friends well.
Thank you for spending your time with Walter!! I need to see his cousins too!!!!! The more challenge to his brain the better!!!!!
Patty says: Whenever you visit now, please make sure Walter is wearing grey boots on his feet. Aaron wants him to wear them at all times. His feet are curling in. He needs flat feet to walk so this is VERY IMPORTANT!! Also, please make sure that he is wearing the brace on his hand to keep his fingers straight. If not, please call the nurse. Thanks!!
Brought Wally a small Walkman radio with headphones today for his listening pleasure. He did seem to enjoy it. When you are at the end of a Walter visit, ask him if he wants his radio on, and what channel. Walt likes 1280 AM sports talk, and 950 AM talk. He also likes 96.5 CMF also. It takes 1 AA battery and I'll get some rechargeables if this works out.
Patty says: Kudos to Tom for the radio. Walter will enjoy the radio I am sure.
Tonight (Sat.) I am having a movie night for Walter. I would like the regular, dedicated friends to stay home for a change. I am inviting the friends who have not had a chance to visit. It would be great to see you all!! We are going to be watching "Caddyshack". (Thanks Timmy) The movie will start at 8:00. Hope to see you there!!!
We are always praying for you and the family. My visit with Walt last month was very good as he had a good day. Wish we were closer in distance but we are always close in our love.
Cousin Brian
Patty says: Thanks to Nan & Brian for joining Walter and I for movie night. It was wonderful to visit with you guys and catch up. Nan-you are the best baker and friend. Brian-you are one of Walter's favorite people and I am sure he loved having you there with him on a Sat. night. Love you guys!Patty
Patty,
It was nice to spend the time with you and Walt and to see him chow down some of Nan's apple crisp. It's a good sign that he's still got a healthy appetite -- beans and all! Now if he can just kick the infections and then avoid any new ones, he can get back on track with where all his friends working with him and the therapists had him.
And thanks to the guys who made the movie available. I can't get enough of that one, although my wife Nan can't stand it. (I wonder if that's part of why I can't get enough of it?)
Keep working hard, Walt! You've come so far in between infections that I'm sure once you're free of them, you can pull your way back up to yelling at the Bills and cursing the Red Sox again.
Brian & Nan
