It's Saturday and Walt seems to be pulling it together today. He is receiving shorter but frequent periods of rehabilitation. He had at least 4 sessions between breakfast and lunch.
Walt's workouts included some occupational therapy and lots of leg and ankle stretching, standing, walking using a walker, and entering and leaving a chair. If today is a good indication then things are certainly improving since his recent infection of the last week or two. His speech has also improved since a couple of days ago.
His appetite is good as well--Kathy and I brought him some fresh raspberries from the farm market and some strawberry strudel, also from the farm market. He chowed the strudel, saving the berries for later, I guess.
The plan is for Walt to be at home for the day on Sunday July 22. He definitely looks ready for it. But he said that cousin Rick should lose that pink, striped shirt.

By the way, you can click the pictures to see larger versions. For example, if you click on the picture of Walt and Kathy, you can see the remains of his strudel in the right corner of his mouth. It's sort of endearing.
I would like to add my 2 cents. Walt was a funny guy today. He asked me if I wanted a bite of strudel, but did not actually share when I said yes. A man after my own heart - I am not one to share my food. :)
He also said no to having his picture taken with me, but relented when Gino asked again. He laughed when I thanked him for the photo so he either thinks I'm a nut case or else he was tickled to think I was so pleased.
Patty called while we were there and she and Gino talked at length. Meanwhile I asked Walt if he liked military history and got a real spark of interest in return. We had a good little conversation. It was the first genuine sparkle I saw today. He did very well at standing and walking - I was impressed. After 2 hours or so and a few short therapy sessions Walt was clearly getting tired, though he propelled himself over to the cafeteria for lunch by using his feet and left hand to move the wheelchair.
It was my first visit in a while and it was good to see Walt. It was amazing how much time flew by so quickly.

Hey Patty, you too!
Hey Walt, that shirt goes too well with my top-siders, I can't give it up.
If Bob Weir can wear pink Lacoste polo's and get away with it, so can I!
Anyway, hope you're having a good day at home - got a nice day for it.
Cousin Rick
A message from Dick Flemming:
I stopped by Sat. afternoon to see Walt; nobody else was there, but we had a good conversation and chatted about a recent beef roast Bern and I went to at Honeoye Lake at Kelly and Bean's. We saw some planes fly over from the antique air show at Geneseo and we talked about the stealth, B-17s and an Eagle that we saw fly over Honeoye Lake. Walt looked very good and conversed very well for over an hour. It was good to see you Wally. All the Best, Dick
Thanks for the tip on enlarging the pictures Gino. I notice on the board that Walt has an EEG scheduled for 1.30 today (Monday) I am glad I saw that as I will not waste a trip.
Cheers
Corinne
ps. My husbands's pink shirt is nothing. It is amazing how adventuresome men can become once they have started wearing bike riders spandex!

PHIL FROM KODAK
Tuesday I visited Walt on my own. I guess I just missed Patty who had left when he fell asleep. Walt and Patty's ex-neighbor from Burley road stopped by and we chatted until 5pm when an orderly woke Walter for dinner. Jean and I went to the dining room with him and his brother Tippy showed up. Walt was not communicating with us but ate everything on his dinner tray.
I gave Walt a book on teh history of the U.S. Army and he seemed to really enjoy it. Hopefully next time I visit he will not sleep through most of it!!
