St. Mary's

I just talked to my mom and she told me that since tomorrow is a holiday, they are not going to move my dad to St. Mary's until Tuesday. I don't really understand why but oh well. I still don't get why he is in the cardiac unit either! Anyway, we will keep you posted. Thanks for checking in!

Welcome to the Walt Rabitz Health Club

After my visit to see Walt in Strong last Sat. night, I decided they should put a big sign outside his room saying “Welcome to the Walt Rabitz Health Club”. I think I probably met almost all Walt’s workout coaches on the same night. I guess I just happened to walk in on “Walt Rabitz Workout Coach Appreciation Night”. I mean, I don’t think you could get as much dedicated coaching if you signed up at any other health club in the city, as Walt gets from the team of Corinne, Rick, Gino, Kathy, Patty, and son Brian. (I’m sure Coach Lindsay works him hard too but she must have had the night off.)

My daughter, Coach Bethany (7 years old), is more of a specialist coach. She liked Walt’s “little pedaling machine”. But she told me on the way out (and apparently was trying to convince Coach Kathy too) that she believes popsicles and Abbotts ice cream are what Walt really needs. So we stopped on the way home at a little mini-Abbotts right around the corner from Strong on Mt. Hope to discuss it further and see if they were as good as Abbotts in Charlotte for when Walt's ready for a walk down the block. But now it seems that important field work was wasted – because Walt is moving on to St. Mary’s. Oh well, it was for a good cause.

And Walt wants St. Mary’s in a big way. Beyond all the encouragement and creative therapy he gets from the Team Walter coaching staff (you guys have been fantastic!), his own personal drive just amazes me. Man, he just keeps getting back on those pedals! I was getting thirsty just sitting there watching him.

Here I thought it’s Saturday night, and even better, his last Saturday night in Strong. Surely, this would probably be Walt’s last hospital gown toga party there. But he was all work and no play. There were a few brief “flashes”, so to speak, but no toga party tonight. This was still a work night because this guy wants out! Look out St. Mary’s, here comes Walter! Tell the bartender over there to get ready to work extended hours! TOGA! TOGA! Oh sorry, guess I got a little carried away. He’ll probably be wearing his regular clothes all the time over there. (But while we’re on that subject, can we mark the calendar to get a toga party scheduled at Patty and Walt’s house for when Walt gets out of St. Mary’s?)

It was great to hear Walt speaking in full sentences. That was a first for me since his injury. True, his voice is still quiet -- he doesn’t have the swagger in his voice back yet. But the wise-cracks are coming back and the looks he’s famous for are priceless. That’s our Walt alright. He’s getting there and St. Mary’s will help him along nicely.

Keep it coming, Walt!

Hi Patty and company,

So good to hear Walter is going to St. Mary's today; I'm sure he'll be a star in rehabilitation!

Patty keep the faith, you are a jewel.
