From Patty

Patty says: Geno-great post. Where do you come upwith these pictures? Thank you to all who have visited the castaway. He has been sleeping alot this week-as some of you visitors know. He did say to me "when am I going to feel better"? I think he had a touch of sinus problems this week with a headache. He gets these normally. He does not like the food so I have been asked to bring him up some of his favorites. He is doing well on therapy. He rides a bike (HELP) when he sits in his chair. He is currently riding 4 times in 20 minutes-3 minutes at a time. Pretty good for a guy who slept for 5 days and could not stick out his tongue upon command for weeks. We are all so proud of Walter. Isobel-he loved you sweatshirt. He tore of the tags and put it on himself. I tried to help but he wanted to do it himself. He will do well at St. Mary's. They are coming on Fri. to evaluate him. Hopefully he will go there in the next couple of weeks. That is why we need to get him off the feeding tube and eating!!! I will start cooking some of his favorite meals but at the moment he is limited. It needs to be soft. If anyone has some good ideas-let me know. Thanks again to all for everything you have done for our family. It is most appreciated!!! Luv ya-Patty

I saw Patty's castaway at noon today. He was in his chair at the doorway to his room, sleeping. I woke him and we had quite a time.

First we fiddled with that blasted exercise machine. After stuggling to move his chair into position(I couldn't release the brakes) and after dragging the pedal machine from one spot to another trying to brace it against a wall, Walt couldn't keep his feet in the stirups even though I know he has been using it. Finally he said, "I give up". I said, "Don't give up yet. You're a mechanic--figure it out." After some thought Walt said, "it's the shoes." He was right. He was wearing a pair of New Balance running shoes and they are too big for the stirups. I pulled off the shoes, and he took off pedaling for a long stretch. When he was finishied peddaling, it was another workout to put his shoes back on--I'm so inept.

We also played one game of tic tac toe--he beat me and gave a sarcastic, "woohoo" at the end. I also asked him to do some math--I showed him some addition and multiplication problems which he easily figured out. Again he did some eye rolling and made it plain that I was wasting his time. Next time I'll show him some differential equations and see how smart he thinks he is then."

Walt took off his helmet after a while--he said it was pounding his head. Otherwise he didn't mention any other pains other than the anguish of not being able to walk. He also wanted to get in bed but the staff wants him up in the chair more often during the day. After a few attempts an standing himself up from the chair we compromised and reclined the chair.

Walt browsed a book about Rochester archtiecture that I brought. I asked him if he was getting tired of military magazines and he said, "never."

They brought lunch when I was leaving--it looked like Turkey Surprise (Any bugs bunny fans remember that one?).

Walt sometimes makes it plain that he feels down about his circumstances but he is easy to engage and interact with. He really makes an effort with his mental and physical exercises. It was a good day. Visit when you can.

Hi All, I also saw the castaway this afternoon. must have just missed you Gino. He was sleeping in the chair so I let him go for awhile then made him wake up for some exercise.
He was not too enthusiastic but I made him anyway. The occupational therapist asked him the other day who I was and he muttered something about me having a big stick. I asked him if that was because I was always threatening to hit him with a big stick if he wouldn't do his exercises. I was rewarded with one of the Walt grins.

I also took the shoes off and I am glad to hear that I am not the only one to be remedial in getting them back on!

The physiotherapists came in and had Walt stand up and then transfer his weight from one foot to the other. It was such a great thing to see. Walt was disappointed that he did not do better, he is so hard on himself. I am beaming with delight.

What was great to see was the increase in muscle tone in his legs already from the exercise he has been getting on the bike. He seemed pleased when I pointed that out.

No more dialysis and the doctors have even taken out the catherters so they must be confident that all is going well.

We also played tic tac toe. We ended in a draw and he wasn't too interested in playing again. I quess he knows a true adversary when he meets one. (Not like Gino)Opps the blog is descending into trash talking. sorry.

Anyway I left him finally having convinced the nurses that it was time he got back into the castaway bed.

Cheers
Corinne

Patty says: Over the long weekend, if you have a minute, please visit Walter. He was awake last night after a busy day. If you visit you may wake him up if you like (or try). He sat up in his chair for a while yesterday reading his military magazines. Thanks for all of your love and support. Luv ya-Patty
