Disappointing Tuesday

Just got off the phone with Patty, and they are going to delay moving Walt to St. Mary's because of a calorie count. The family is very disappointed, having counted on the move all weekend.

Seems that Walt is not eating enough on his own. He takes a few bites of this-and-that, here-and-there and apparently he needs to take more than a few bites of these-and-those to go along with the this-and-that.

And most of all, those bites need to be counted. If Walt eats something while you are in the room, please tell the nurse so they can count the calories he's consumed.

Let us ponder the following:
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it, does it make a sound?
If Walt eats and the nurses don't log it, does it make a difference?

And while exercising the logical and philosophical workings of our minds, let us also consider:
What is an example of a high-calorie, high nutritional-value, soft-textured food?
Is it something that Walt would like?
Is it perishable without refrigeration?
Is it labled?

Feel free to post your recipes here. And let us know what the food critic in 7.34oo thinks.

To Patty, Brian, Lindsay and Tip: keep the faith!

I haven't visited Walt since we've never met, although he knows my husband. Rather than have a strange woman (Tom & Lyn can vouch for my strangeness) visit him at least I can search out soft, nutritious, high-cal. recipes if that will help. How soft is soft? Is macaroni & cheese soft enough or more like mashed potatoes? What kind of stuff does Walt like? I'll be glad to help if I can.

How about milkshakes with protein powder added in for extra nutritional value? or ENSURE? Scrambled eggs? Yoghurt. Cottage cheese. Ham, chicken or egg salads. Bananas. Oatmeal.
Is he not eating because it's hospital food?
Ask the hospital nutritionist for a soft diet menu- they could provide suggestions.

Kathy and Alyce,

Excellent questions - I was wondering similar things.
How about fruit like berries or mango or pineapple? Lots of moisture in those and probably easy to digest. What about pudding? Is Walt not really hungry because he gets all that liquid meal stuff? Does it hurt to chew? With his head injuries mabey it hurts to chew.
Well, this is disappointing but with all that Walt has been through surely he can get the eating part going again. Between all of us we can try different things and (naturally) try to get Walter to say what he would like to try.

Hang tough, Patty!

Is the food in hospital cafeteria the same food that Walt gets in his room. There may be better choices there for Walt, or is the hospital nutritionist fixed in her menu. I think we need some ideas and instructions from the powers that be.
